How to Fix MBR Error in Windows 7

If you’re having boot problems on your Windows PC, it’s often helpful to repair the MBR (Master Boot Record) to restore the Windows 7 boot loader—and you can do it easily from the Windows installation disc.

This is generally most useful if you’ve broken something and there’s a boot loader error, or if you have made the mistake of installing an older version of Windows on the same PC that already has Windows 7 which wipes out the boot loader.

Note: If your PC starts booting into Windows but fails, you should probably try using Safe Mode instead.

Boot From the Windows Install Disc

The first thing you’ll need to do is boot off the install disc, and then click through until you see the “Repair your computer” link in the lower left-hand corner.

You’ll need to choose the correct installation of Windows and then click the Next button.

And then you’ll get to the System Recovery Options screen, where you can get to the Command Prompt.

Repairing the Master Boot Record

If you want to restore the master boot record, you can simply type in the following command:

bootrec /fixmbr

You can also write a new boot sector onto the system partition with this command (which is often more useful):

bootrec /fixboot

And of course, if you just use bootrec /? you’ll be able to see all the options.

If you’ve managed to install XP on the same PC that you already had Windows 7 on, you’ll noticed that you can’t boot into Windows 7 anymore. You can use this command to fix that and restore the Windows 7 bootloader:

bootsect /nt60 all

Depending on the partition that you’ve installed, you might need to substitute the drive letter instead of “all”.

Note: if you want to restore Windows XP back to the menu, you can open up a command prompt in Windows 7 and run this command:

bcdedit /create {ntldr} -d “Windows XP”

Using the Automated Startup Repair

Of course, all this command-line stuff is probably not necessary in most cases. You can usually just use the Startup Repair option from the Recovery menu…

It’ll check for problems and probably fix them. If not, then you can always use the command prompt.

Browse to the directory you want the disk to reside, choose the size you want it to be, and select dynamic or a fixed. If you want the disk to expand in size as you add files to it, then pick Dynamically expanding. Check Fixed size if you want a specific size and for it to stay that way.

 

In Disk Management you will see the virtual drive listed as unallocated space.

To begin using it you’ll need to Right-click and select Initialize Disk.

 

In the initialize disk box just keep MBR selected and hit OK.

Create a Volume

The New Simple Volume Wizard starts up and it’s just a matter of completing it.

Choose the amount of space you want to use for the volume.

Assign it a dive letter that is not currently being used.

Format the new volume as NTFS, FAT32, or FAT. Check if you want a quick format and file compression.

The wizard is complete, click on Finish.

If you have AutoPlay enabled it should pop up for you to open up your new virtual hard disk.

It will be listed with the other disks in Disk Management.

Of course you will also see it listen under My Computer.

When you add new files to a drive that is encrypted with BitLocker, BitLocker encrypts them automatically. If you share encrypted files on the network then they can be normally accessed by the authorized users only.

To use BitLocker Drive Encryption, your computer has to meet certain hardware requirements. These requirements vary depending on the type of drive that you are encrypting.

To encrypt the drive that Windows is installed on (the operating system drive), BitLocker stores its own encryption and decryption key in a hardware device that is separate from your hard disk i.e. either Trusted Platform Module (TPM) or a removable USB Flash Drive.

Have at least two partitions. One partition must include the drive Windows is installed on and must be at least 400 MB. This is the drive that BitLocker will encrypt. The other partition is the active partition, which must remain unencrypted so that the computer can be started. If your computer does not have two partitions, BitLocker will create them for you.

You can use BitLocker to encrypt fixed data drives (such as internal hard drives) and removable data drives (such as external hard drives and USB flash drives). To encrypt a data drive, it must be formatted using either the exFAT, FAT16, FAT32, or NTFS file system and must be at least 128 MB.

4. If you are a window 7 user,  then you will need to add a new folder here, right click on the pane > new > key and name it StorageDevicePolicies

5.Open the StorageDevicePolicies by clicking on it then right click on the plane >> New > DWord (32 bit)>> rename it  WriteProtect . Modify it’s value to 1 to enable write protect .

RESTART THE SYSTEM FOR  THE CHANGE TO TAKE PLACE.
Now every time anyone will try to copy data to pen drive this image will pop out.

How to remove write protection

Ok,  when you need to take the data from your system for your own,  just change the value of  WriteProtect that you created above, to 0 (ZERO). Now this will get disabled and you can copy data now.

2. Extract the contents of the Odin 1.85.zip file to obtain the Odin3 v1.85.exe file.
3. Double-click on the Odin3 v1.85.exe file to launch Odin on your computer.
4. Unplug your phone from the computer if it is connected. After unplugging, turn your phone off.
5. Put your phone into Download Mode. To do this, hold the Volume Down, Home, and Power buttons together until the screen turns on. Press the Volume Up key to put your phone into Download Mode.
6. Connect your phone to the PC using the USB cable. In Odin, a message saying “Added!!” will appear on the bottom left of the window.

11. Click on the Start button in Odin to start flashing the firmware to your phone.
12. After the flashing completes, your phone will automatically reboot. You should be able to get a “PASS” message on the top left part of Odin.
• NOTE: If you get a FAIL message or Odin gets stuck, disconnect your phone from the PC and close Odin. Remove the battery from your phone, re-insert it, and place your phone into Download Mode again. Open Odin and do the procedure starting from step 6.
13. Once you see the Samsung logo on your phone’s screen, you can safely disconnect your phone from the PC.
